Crochet Shell Coat

Crochet Shell Coat – free crochet pattern for a 16″ chest 0-3 month baby, a delightful little coat crocheted in a shell pattern, it can be decorated with the teddy bear face motif or left plain.
I have written it in USA and UK formats, so please scroll down for both.

Materials
For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn

I have used:-
130 grams of King Cole big value baby DK yarn in color 1
Small amount of King Cole Big Value Baby DK Yarn in color 2

An equivalent yarn would be a light worsted #3

4.00mm Clover crochet hook
3 small buttons

GAUGE 5dc and 2.5 rows of dc measures approx 1 Inch

Crochet Shell Coat

Coat – Worked in one piece starting with yoke.

Using color 1 ch55, (RS) 1dc in 4th ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. Turn. (52dc + ch3)

2nd Row – (Inc Row) ch3. 1dc in next dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of the next 4dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (62dc + ch3)

3rd Row – ch3, 1dc in each dc to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn.

4th Row – (Inc Row) ch3, 1dc in next dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of the  next 3dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (77dc + ch3)

5th Row – Rpt 3rd Row.

6th Row – (Inc Row) ch3, 1dc in next dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of the next 2dc * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (102dc + ch3)

7th Row – Rpt 3rd Row.

8th Row – (Inc Row) as 6th Row, until 1dc remains, 2dc in dc, 1dc in top of ch3. (136dc + ch3)

Commence with Skirt – ch4, 1trc in next dc, skip 1dc, * 1 shell (see abbrev) in next dc, skip 1dc, 1trc in each of next 2dc, skip 1dc, * rpt from * to * to last 4dc and ch3, skip 1dc, 1 shell in next dc, skip 1dc, 1trc in next dc, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (27 shells)

First Pattern Row – ch4, 1bptrc around next trc, 1 shell in ch1 space of next shell, * bptrc around each of next 2 single trc, 1 shell in ch1 space of next shell, * rpt from * to * to last trc and 4tch, 1bptrc around last tr, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn.

Second Pattern Row – ch4, 1fptrc around next trc, 1 shell in ch1 space on next shell, * 1fptrc around each of next 2 single trc, 1 shell in ch1 space on next shell, * rpt from * to * to last trc and 4tch, fptrc around next trc, 1dc in top of ch4. Turn.

Next Row – (Divide for armholes)
ch4, 1bptrc around next trc * 1 shell in ch1 space on next shell, bptrc around each of next 2 single trc, * rpt from * to * (2 more times),
1 shell in ch1 space of next shell, 1bptrc around next trc, skip next (trc, 5 shells and trc), bptrc around next single trc, rpt from * to * (8 more times),
1 shell in ch1 space of next shell, bptrc around next trc, skip next (trc, 5 shells and trc), bptrc around next single trc, rpt from * to * (3 more times),
1 shell in ch1 space of next shell, 1bptrc around next trc, 1dc in top of ch4. Turn (17 Shells)

Rpt Second Pattern Row.

Rpt First and Second Pattern Rows until 13 shell rows have been worked in all from yoke or work measures approx 10.5 Inches from shoulder. Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – With WS facing, rejoin color 1 to single trc underarm, ch4, 1trc in base of ch4, * 1 shell in ch1 space of next shell, 1bptrc around each of next 2 single trc, * rpt from * to * to last shell and trc, work 1 shell in ch1 space on last shell, 1bptrc around single trc, sl st to top of ch4 at beginning of row. Turn. (5 shells)

Skipping the first trc for next row only, work pattern rows as follows:-

Pattern Row 1 – ch4, * Work 1 shell in ch1 space of next shell, 1fptrc around each of next 2 single trc, * rpt from * to * to last shell and trc, work 1 shell in ch1 space of shell, 1fptrc around trc, sl st to top of ch4 on beginning of row. Turn.

Pattern Row 2 – ch4, bptrc around next single trc, * 1 shell in ch1 space of next shell, 1bptrc around each of next 2 single trc, * rpt from * to * to last shell, work 1 shell in ch1 space of shell, sl st to top of ch4 on beginning of row. Turn.

Continue with Pattern rows 1 & 2 until 11 shell rows have been worked in all from yoke or sleeve seam measures approx 5 Inches from underarm. Fasten off. Turn.

Contrast Color Edge – Join in color 2, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in next trc, * 1sc in each of next 2dc, (1sc, ch1, 1sc) in ch1 space of shell, 1sc in each of next 2dc, 1sc in each of next 2trc, * rpt from * to * to last shell, work 1sc in each of next 2dc, (1sc, ch1, 1sc) in ch1 space of shell, 1sc in each of next 2dc, sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Button/Buttonhole Bands – Starting at lower edge RS facing, using color 1, work 42sc evenly in row ends up first front edge, 3sc in corner, 51sc around neck edge, 3sc in corner, 42sc evenly in row ends down second front edge. Turn.

Next Row – (Buttonhole Row) ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc up front edge to corner, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each sc around neck to next corner, 1sc in corner, * ch2, skip 1sc, 1sc in next 6sc, * rpt from * to * once, ch2, skip 1sc, 1sc in each sc to end.  Turn.

Next Row – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc and ch2 space up front edge to corner. Fasten off.

Return to second front edge and working from neck downwards, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each sc to end. Fasten off.

Contrast Color Edge – With WS facing, join color 2 at the bottom of buttonhole band, ch1, 2sc in base of ch1, 1sc in each of the next 2 row ends, 1sc in next (dc and trc), * 1sc in each of next 2dc, (1sc, ch1, 1sc) in ch1 space of shell, 1sc in each of next 2dc, 1sc in each of next 2trc, * rpt from * to * to last trc and 3 row ends from button band, work 1sc in last trc, 1sc in each of next 2 row ends, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each sc up first front edge, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each sc around neck, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each sc down second front edge to corner, 1sc in base of ch1, sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Finishing – Close small gaps under arm’s, tie off and sew in ends. Sew on 3 buttons at yoke to correspond with buttonholes.

Teddy Bear Face – With color 2 yarn make a magic circle, (RS) ch3, 12dc in circle, close circle pulling loose thread, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. DNT. (12dc + ch3)

Next Row – ch3, work 2dc in each dc to end, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row. DNT. (24dc + ch3)

Rpt last row once. DNT. (48dc + ch3)

Next Row – ch1, sl st in base of ch1, sl st in next 16dc, 2dc in next dc, 3trc in next dc, 2dc in next dc, (first ear made) sl st in next 10dc, 2dc in next dc, 3trc in next dc, 2dc in next dc, (second ear made) sl st in next 16dc, sl st to first sl st. Fasten off.

Nose – Using color 1 make magic circle, (WS) ch1, 12sc in circle, close circle pulling loose thread, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. DNT. (12sc)

Next Row – ch1, work 2sc in each sc to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. DNT. (24sc)

Next Row – ch1, work 1sc in each sc to end, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Fasten off. (24sc)

With RS of nose facing attach to face, use black colored yarn to darn on eyes, nose and mouth (see picture) decorate with a ribbon bow etc.

2nd Row – (Inc Row) 3ch. 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of the next 4tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (62tr + 3ch)

3rd Row – 3ch, 1tr in each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.

4th Row – (Inc Row) 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of the  next 3tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (77tr + 3ch)

5th Row – Rpt 3rd Row.
