Crochet Pretty Coat

Crochet Pretty Coat – free crochet pattern for a 16″ chest 0-3 month baby, a delightful little coat which is quick to make, ideal for everyday use or to give as a gift.
I have written it in USA and UK formats, so scroll down for both.

Materials
For great results it is always best to use the recommended yarn

I have used:-
100 grams of Paintbox Simply DK yarn in main color yarn
50 grams of Paintbox Simply DK yarn in each of the 2 contrast colors

An equivalent yarn would be a light worsted #3

4.00mm Clover crochet hook
3 small buttons

GAUGE 9dc & 4 rows of dc measures approx 2” square

Crochet Pretty Coat

Start with yoke (worked in one piece) – Using main color yarn, ch55, (RS) 1dc in 4th ch from hook, 1dc in each ch to end. Turn. (52dc + ch3)

Row 2 – (Inc) ch3, 1dc in next dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of the next 4dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (62dc + ch3)

Row 3 – ch3, 1dc in each dc to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn.  (62dc + ch3)

Row 4 – (Inc) ch3, 1dc in next dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of the next 3dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (77dc + ch3)

Row 5 – as row 3.  (77dc + ch3)

Row  6 – (Inc) ch3, 1dc in next dc, * 2dc in next dc, 1dc in each of the next 2dc, * rpt from * to * to end, 1dc in top of ch3. Turn. (102dc + ch3)

Row 7 – as row 3.  (102dc + ch3)

Row 8 – (Increase) as row 6, until 1dc and ch3 remain, 2dc in dc, 1dc in top of ch3. (136dc + ch3)

Fasten off.

Commence with Skirt – Change to first contrast color yarn, ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, * skip 1dc, 1 shell (see abbrev above) in next dc, skip 1dc, 1sc in next dc, rpt from * to *  to last 3dc and ch3, skip 1dc, 1 shell in next dc, skip 1dc, 1sc in top of ch3. (34 shell groups). Turn.

Fasten off. Join in main color.

2nd Row – ch3, * 1 V Stitch (see abbrev) in ch1 space of shell, 1dc in sc, * rpt from * to * to last shell and sc, 1 V stitch in shell, 1dc in sc. Turn.

3rd Row – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, * 1 shell in V stitch, 1sc in dc, * rpt from * to * to last V stitch and ch3, 1 shell in V stitch, 1sc in top of ch3. Turn.

Fasten off.

4th Row – (Divide for armholes) Join in second contrast color yarn, ch3, * 1 V stitch in ch1 space of shell, 1dc in sc, * rpt from * to * (3 more times), 1 V stitch in ch1 space of next shell, 2dc ch1 in sc, skip 7 shell groups, 2dc in next sc, * rpt from * to * (9 more times), 1 V stitch in ch1 space of next shell,  2dc, ch1 in sc, skip 7 shell groups, 2dc in next sc, * rpt from * to * (4 more times), 1 V stitch in ch1 space of shell, 1dc in sc. Turn.

5th Row – ch1, 1sc in base of ch1, * 1 shell in V stitch, 1sc in dc * rpt from * to * (4 times more), 1 shell in ch space underarm between dc’s, 1sc in next dc, rpt from * to * (10 times more), 1 shell in ch space underarm between dc’s, 1sc in next dc, rpt from * to * to last V stitch and ch3, 1 shell in V stitch 1sc in top of ch3. Turn. (22 shell groups)

Fasten off.

The 2nd and 3rd Rows on the skirt form the pattern, rpt these 2 rows alternating colors as set until 8 shell rows in all have been worked from yoke or work measures approx 10” from shoulder.

Fasten off.

Sleeves x 2 – Using second contrast color yarn with WS facing, rejoin yarn in same sc you have already worked 2dc & ch1 in at the base of armhole, ch3, * 1 V stitch in next shell group, 1dc in sc, * rpt from * to * (5 times more), 1 V stitch in shell, 1dc in same sc as 2dc at base of armhole, sl st to top of ch3 on beginning of row.  Turn.  (7, V stitches)

2nd Row – ch1, 1sc in first dc, * 1 shell in V stitch, 1sc in dc, * rpt from * to * to last V stitch and ch3, 1 shell in V stitch, skip ch3, sl st to first sc on beginning of row. Turn.

Fasten off.

Following color sequence as skirt, rpt pattern rows in this way, 1 V stitch row then 1 shell row, sl st to beginning and turning at the end of each row for 2 more times each, until 5 shell rows have been worked in all from yoke or sleeve seam measures approx 3” under arm. Turn.

Fasten off.

Cuff – Join main color yarn, ch2, * skip 1dc, 1sc in next (dc, ch1 space, dc) skip 1dc, 1hdc in next sc, * rpt from * to * to last shell, skip 1dc, 1sc in next (dc, ch1 space, dc) skip 1dc, sl st to top of ch2 on beginning of row. Turn. (28 stitches)

Next Row – ch1, 1sc in each stitch to end, sl st to first sc. Turn. (28sc)

Rpt the last row three more times.

Fasten off.

If you prefer a tighter cuff, use a 3.50mm hook.

Button – Buttonhole Bands – Using main color yarn, starting at lower edge with RS facing and working in row ends, work 38sc evenly along up first front edge to corner, 3sc in corner, 1sc in each dc around neck, 3sc in corner, work 38sc evenly along and in row ends down second front edge. Turn.

Next Row – ch1, work 1sc in each sc to neck edge. Turn.

Next Row – Work picot edge along to end (see abbrev)

Fasten off.

Buttonholes – With WS facing return to neck edge on first side, working from neck edge downwards, work 1sc in first sc, * ch2, skip 1sc, 1sc in each of next 7sc, * rpt from * to * once, ch2, skip 1sc, work 1sc in each of remaining sc to end. Turn. (3 buttonholes)

Next Row – Work picot row working in each sc and ch2 space to end.

Fasten off.

Finishing – Weave in and trim off loose ends of yarn, close small gaps underarms.

Turn through to RS. Sew 3 buttons on yoke to correspond with buttonholes.

Start with yoke (worked in one piece) – Using main colour yarn, make 55ch, (RS) 1tr into 4th ch from hook, 1tr in each ch to end. Turn.  (52tr + 3ch)

Row 2 – (Inc) 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of the next  4tr, * rpt from * to *  to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (62tr + 3ch)

Row 3 – 3ch, 1tr in each tr to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn.  (62tr + 3ch)

Row 4 – (Inc) 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of the next  3tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (77tr + 3ch)

Row 5 – as row 3.  (77tr + 3ch)

Row  6 – (Inc) 3ch, 1tr into next tr, * 2tr into next tr, 1tr into each of the next  2tr, * rpt from * to * to end, 1tr into top of 3ch. Turn. (102tr + 3ch)

Row 7 – as row 3.  (102tr + 3ch)

Row 8 – (Increase) as row 6, until 1tr and 3ch remain, 2tr into tr, 1tr into top  of 3ch. (136tr + 3ch)

Fasten off.

Fasten off.

4th Row – (Divide for armholes) Join in second contrast colour yarn, 3ch, * 1 V  stitch into 1ch space of shell, 1tr into dc, * rpt from * to * (3 more times), 1 V  stitch into 1ch space of next shell,  2tr 1ch into dc, miss 7 shell groups, 2tr into  next dc, * rpt from * to * (9 more times), 1 V stitch into 1ch space of next  shell,  2tr, 1ch into dc, miss 7 shell groups, 2tr into next dc, *  rpt from * to *  (4 more times), 1 V stitch into 1ch space of shell, 1tr into dc. Turn.

5th Row – 1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, * 1 shell into V stitch, 1dc into tr * rpt  from * to * (4 times more), 1 shell into ch space underarm between tr’s, 1dc  into next tr, rpt from * to * (10 times more), 1 shell into ch space underarm  between tr’s, 1dc into next tr, rpt from * to * to last V stitch and 3ch, 1 shell  into V stitch 1dc into top of 3ch. Turn. (22 shell groups)

Fasten off.

Next Row – 1ch, 1dc into each stitch to end, ss to first dc. Turn. (28dc)

Rpt the last row three more times.

Fasten off.
